Welcome to the current news page! Each month I will update this page with news and events taking place in school.
Thank you to all of the parents who came into Maths for fun in the
Ash class on Thursday. You can see the pictures from this in our photo gallery
under special events.
Fancy Dress Cake
Sale Friday 26th October
We will be holding a fancy
dress cake sale in the Sycamore class on the last day of school before mid term.
We would really appreciate your support in this so if you could please bake
cakes, buns, cupcakes and bring them into the school on the day that would be
fantastic! The sale will take place from 1.10-2.10pm. Senior Infant parents
can collect their children and bring them to the cake sale in their fancy dress
costumes.
Maths Week Ireland 2012
will take place from 13th October - 21 October. We are making a
special effort at Powerstown ETNS to mark the occasion. There will be a special
emphasis on Maths throughout the week and we will have our annual “Maths Day” on
Thursday 18th. Parents and Guardians are asked to assist us by participating in
“Maths for Fun”activities on the morning of
Thursday, 18th.
From 8.30am – 9am, parents and
guardians are invited to come into their child’s class and play numerous fun and
simple maths games with the children. All the games will be laid out on the
table with simple instructions to follow. Please let me know if you can come in
Thursday morning!
Healthy
Lunches:
Please have a look at the leaflet on
healthy lunches that is being sent home in your child's folder on Tuesday. It
has lots of ideas for healthy lunches and snacks. Please be reminded that fizzy
drinks, crisps, chocolate, cakes and sweets are not allowed as part of our
healthy eating policy and will be sent home. Each day children who bring in a
healthy lunch with fruit and vegetables will receive a sticker.
Homework:
Week 2 (Monday 8th October): sounds oa, ie, ee or, y – and
word list 4, reading and letter formation.
After School
Clubs:
Update 9/10/12 - All of the after school
clubs are now FULL.
The following after school clubs are
available for senior infants for 8 weeks this term:
Monday -
Sport with Katie
Tuesday - Music with
Helena
Wednesday - Dance, yoga and meditation with
Lorraine
Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for
sport on Monday and dance on Tuesday i.e. tracksuit and runners.
Clubs
start Monday 8th October. We have limited places left so if you wish for your
child to attend please let Lorraine know as soon as possible. If you cannot
commit to the full 8 weeks a pay as you go option will be available where you
can pay and sign up the morning of the class subject to availability. Please
let Lorraine know if you would like to do this.
Maths:
In
Maths this month we will be learning about 2-D shapes - the square, the circle,
the triangle and the rectangle. You can support this topic at home by
identifying shapes in the environment e.g. the door is a rectangle, the dinner
plate is a circle. Playing eye spy games, drawing pictures using shapes,
drawing around shapes... We will also be learning about the number 6. You can
help your child by counting forwards from 0-6 and backwards from 6-0, writing
the numeral 6, counting sets of objects.
FAI Soccer starts
Wednesday 3rd October for 4 weeks:
Soccer
coaching for Senior Infants starts on Wednesday 3rd October and will run every
Wednesday for 4 weeks up until mid-term break. After mid-term GAA football
coaching will take place every Wednesday with James. Please ensure that your
child is dressed appropriately for physical activity i.e. tracksuit and runners.
If your child is not wearing the appropriate footwear they may not be permitted
to participate for safety reasons.
After School Clubs:
After school clubs for Senior Infants will begin on
Monday 8th October 1.10-2.10pm. Clubs will run Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
for 8 weeks. If you wish for your child to participate in after school clubs
please complete and return with paymemt the permission slip that is being sent
home today (2nd October) in your child's folder. Places are limited to 12
children per class and places will be allocated on a first come first served
basis.
Homework:
I have updated the
homework section of the blog with October homework. Please ensure you practice
the letter sounds and reading with your child every night. If your child is
experiencing any problems or is finding the homework not challenging enough
please let me know. Please note that homework folders and books must be brought
into school every day for checking.
Aistear:
We have begun
our Aistear programme of learning through play this week. The theme for October
is witches and wizards. We are learning through play in dramatic role-play,
reading, writing, junk art and construction stations. Each day we get to pick
which station we work at. Please continue to bring in old cardboard boxes,
toilet rolls, scrap paper etc. to keep us going in our junk art station! Please
see the parental involvement section under 'more...' for details of the items we
would like your help in sourcing for our Aistear stations. The junk art the
children create each day will be sent home on that day.

Week:
We would like to thank all of the parents who
came in to teach us about languages last week for Language Week. We learned
some words, phrases, rhymes and songs in Urdu, Telugu, Deutsch, Romanian,
English and Bini. You can see some pictures and videos from Language week in
the photos section.
Shared
Reading:
Thank you also to the parents who have come in
so far for shared reading on Monday mornings. All parents are welcome to join
us 8.30-8.40am every Monday. We would also love to hear stories in other
languages so if you have any
children's story books at home that you would
like to share with us in another language we would love to hear them too!

the third week of October. There will
be events taking place during the
week in class and in the whole school. You
are invited to come in to play
maths games with us during the week. Details of
times will be sent home
before the event but if you would be interested in
participating please let
Lorraine know.
Learn Together:
This week (week beginning 1st October) we will be learning
about our local habitat to celebrate Habitat Day 1st October. We will go on a
nature walk around the school to observe the changes occurring in the
environment and we will conduct an environmental audit of the school for the
green schools. We will also look at road safety as part of safety week and will
learn the safe cross code song. You can practice this at home with your child
and talk to them about road safety and the environment. Ask your child about
the green school programme and what we do in school to keep our environment
clean and safe!
Next week (week beginning 8th October) we will be
celebrating space week. We will watch clips of the moon landing, read stories
about space such as 'Winnie in Space' and 'The Sea of Tranquility' and we will
do some space themed art.
