First Steps Writing Programme
Genre Writing
We use the First Steps Writing Programme to develop children's writing ability. This programme teaches writing through 6 specific genres:
Free Writing
Alongside the teaching of genre the children are also encouraged to engage in free writing. Free writing allows the children to explore their own creativity and to put into words and pictures their own feelings, thoughts and experiences. Free writing is not formally assessed or corrected, it is used to engage children in the writing process and allows them the freedom to choose what they want to write and to practice approximate spelling.
Poetry
Throughout the year children will both listen to, read and write their own poetry. In Senior Infants children will engage in writing their own onomatopaeic and acrostic poems.

Handwriting
In Powerstown ETNS we teach and use joined cursive writing from Junior Infants up. Your child has received a laminated example of the handwriting we use in their homework folder. Please practice letter formation of the small letters with them at home - in the air, on the table with finger, or on scrap paper. In school the children practice their handwriting in their Handwriting Today books. Correct pencil grip and posture is essential for good handwriting so please encourage your child to sit correctly and hold their pencil tightly when writing.
