October Homework
Please note:
Homework folders must be brought into school every day with story book, red phonics book and letter chart inside.
In October the following will be sent home in the homework folders:
- a story book
- your child's red phonics notebook
- a laminated copy of instructions on letter and number formation (please note we
are only using small letters)
The procedure for homework in October is as follows:
Your child will receive their Jolly Phonics Sound Book (red notebook) and a story book every Monday.
They will have 2 pieces of homework to complete from the notebook;
revision of letter sounds and reading words from word lists (at back of book) as per the below:
Week 1 (Monday 1st October): sounds f, b, ai, j – and word list 3
Week 2 (Monday 8th October): sounds oa, ie, ee or, z – and word list 4
Week 3 (Monday 15th October): sounds w, ng, v, oo – and word list 5
Week 4 (Monday 22nd October): sounds y, x, ch, sh – and word list 6
In your sound book the word box lists which are called 'a' are for supplementary work, if your child is progressing through the lists 1,2,3,etc with no problems please
The picture story books are for supervised shared reading. Please encourage your child to tell you what is happening in the pictures and to ‘read’ the story to you. Ask your child questions about the book, for example:
Who is the author?
Who is the illustrator?
Can you predict what might happen from the title/cover/pictures?
How do you think the character felt when...?
Have them reflect on the story by asking questions like 'what was your favourite part?' or ask them to retell the story in their own words or even act out scenes from the story.
Maths:
In maths this month we are learning about pattern, ordinal numer (first, second, third, fourth and last), 2 d shapes (circle, square, triangle and rectangle) and the number six. We are also continuing to sort and classify objects into sets e.g. by size, colour, shape, pattern, texture, can/can't roll.
To practice writing the number 6 please say the rhyme with your child:
Down we go and make a loop, number 6 makes a hoop.
Ask your child to identify shapes at home e.g.
- the plate is a circle, it has 1 side and 0 corners,
- the door is a rectangle, it has 4 sides (2 long and 2 short) and 4 corners,
- the window is a square, it has 4 sides the same length and 4 corners,
- the napkin is folded into a triangle, it has 3 sides and 3 corners
Ask your child what type of sides the shapes have - straight or curved, can they roll the shape?
Have your child order objects/people/sequence events in a story - the spoon is first, the plate is second and the fork is last.
Library Book:
Please note the mobile library will visit us every second Thursday so your child’s library book is due back on Wednesday 24th October.
